Manako vs Claude: What is the Best?

Claude is an excellent general-purpose AI assistant from Anthropic. It can reason about images and is genuinely useful for a wide range of work. It is not a camera platform, it does not pretend to be one, and like every hosted LLM it lives in someone else's cloud, billed by the token.

They Solve Different Problems

There is a tendency to compare every AI product to every other AI product because they all use neural networks under the hood. It is not a useful framing. Claude is built to be an excellent conversational assistant. Manako is built to be an excellent vision agent platform that lives on the kind of hardware real sites actually have. The overlap in target buyer is small.

If your question is "can an AI look at this picture and tell me something useful about it," Claude is an obvious choice. If your question is "how do I get my 18 forecourt cameras to detect spills, fuel theft and queue length, route the evidence to my duty manager in real time, and run for the next twelve months on a single small machine without an engineer looking after it," Claude is the wrong tool. That is not a criticism of Claude. It is the wrong shape of question for what Claude is.

The Economics

Running Claude against every frame of a camera stream is not viable on cost. Even at heavily sampled rates, the token economics do not work for continuous monitoring across a fleet of cameras. The per-call costs are predictable for chat. They are not predictable for video that runs 24/7. Manako runs specialist skills locally on a small machine, with a pricing model that maps to agents and cameras, not to tokens consumed. The site manager can budget for it the same way they budget for a router.

The Data Path

Customers in regulated industries, customers in the EU, customers running anything sensitive, often cannot send camera frames to a third-party API. Manako runs locally by default. We have zero access to your cameras or footage. Only people with physical access to your device can view streams or change settings. That is the deployment model, not a feature behind a paywall.

The Evidence Problem

Even if Claude could watch your cameras at a reasonable cost, the output is a chat reply. To turn that into something useful for the duty manager at site 47, you would need to build deduplication, routing rules, clip attachment, escalation, logging and shift-aware notifications. That is a real engineering project. Manako ships the evidence path. Alerts go to Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram or email, attached to the relevant clip, routed to the person on shift, with webhooks if you want to wire them into your own systems.

Where Each One is the Right Call

Use Claude When:

  1. You want a thoughtful assistant for reasoning, writing, analysis or one-off image questions.
  2. You are doing knowledge work with a human in the loop.
  3. You want a high-quality general model and you accept the cloud API trade-offs.

Use Manako When:

  1. You have cameras and you want them turned into a continuous source of operational intelligence.
  2. You need it to run 24/7 on the hardware you can actually deploy per site.
  3. You need evidence to reach the right person, not answers in a chat window.
  4. You need footage to stay on your site.

Conclusion

Claude is a model you talk to. Manako is an agent that works for you, on your hardware, on your sites, and gets the evidence to the people who need to act. Both are useful. They are not substitutes.
